Soñar en Grande: Strengthening Leadership Through Parental Engagement and Leadership Innovation

Gloria Martinez Cahn Fellow 2023

The purpose of this study was to raise awareness of the cultural identity of emergent bilingual students at De Zavala Elementary. We aimed to enhance leadership capacity among 4th and 5th grade emergent bilingual students. Our analysis of reading data revealed the need for a deeper understanding of the whole child, encompassing both academic and social-emotional aspects. While a curriculum exists, it lacks culturally relevant components that reflect and honor the diverse backgrounds of these students.

We have implemented various programs and initiatives to create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and heard. We began by establishing a leadership cohort of emergent bilingual students in grades 4th and 5th grade. Throughout the school year the leadership cohort of emergent bilingual students participated in a range of culturally relevant literacy activities, tracked their data, listened to keynote speakers, and took part in multicultural events. Platicás (conversations) were created to give parents a voice in their child’s education as well as the sharing of lived experiences. Additionally the platicás included diversity, equity, and inclusion which encouraged open dialogues and fostered a culture of mutual respect. Testimonios (testimonials) from teachers, parents, and students about the lived experiences of the cohort were shared. The key stakeholders included teachers, students, and parents who overall impacted student growth. The aim of our study was to break the barriers of inequities in our school that did not foster a deep understanding of cultural relevance in the classrooms and to build a sense of belonging for our students as well as the presence of parental engagement in our students' learning. We believe that by embedding social justice into the fabric of our school, we are not only preparing our students to succeed academically but also to become compassionate, empathetic leaders in their communities. The journey towards equity and justice is ongoing, and with the collective effort of our dedicated staff, students, and parents, we are making strides every day. Our project is ongoing as our stakeholders continue to be inspired to promote their social justice impact on student success.
