Systemic Solutions to Overcoming Unconscious Bias in Schools

Christine Fleming Cahn Fellow 2022

In a world where educational equity remains an elusive goal, this leadership journey began with a simple idea; “Learning Partnerships.” The project emerged from deep engagement with Zaretta Hammond’s Culturally Responsive Teaching principles and a stark realization of the challenges posed by unconscious bias, as detailed in Unconscious Bias in Schools. This narrative unfolds the exploration, experimentation, barriers and transformational conclusions of working to build systems that will overcome unconscious bias of educators, working to dismantle systemic racism. Through the establishment of learning partnerships with students of color, our staff have been navigating the complex terrain of educational equity, embracing both immediate tactical changes and long-term adaptive shifts. This report illustrates a leadership journey, challenges, insights and an unwavering commitment to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment.
