“Unlocking Success Together” Discover Our MTSS Solution for Student Engagement

Dr. Michele Luard Cahn Fellow 2022

After analyzing several data points, the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center II Cahn Fellow and Ally focused the research on student engagement. For this research, student engagement is defined as measuring a student’s involvement in their learning. We recognized that a student’s engagement could be measured in six ways: (1) cognitive, (2) emotional, (3) behavioral, (4) social, (5) physical, and (6) cultural. According to the National Center of Safe Supportive Learning Environments (2023), student engagement is crucial to academic achievement and a positive school climate. According to a substantial body of research and data, a strong school climate must include student engagement, which is strongly associated with academic success.

Students show behavioral engagement by attending classes regularly, doing their work, arriving prepared, and participating in class and extracurricular activities. When students enjoy going to school, when evidence of interest is observed, and they identify with the school’s culture, one may conclude they are emotionally engaged. When students work hard to succeed in school, their cognitive engagement increases, which can result in a positive self-concept in academics. Engaged students are attentive, complete assignments, attend school, and actively participate in learning.

We analyzed different tools to improve a student’s engagement. We recognized that the newly introduced Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) may allow for an increased level of student engagement. Using the MTSS, we conducted a prototype to measure the impact. The prototype consisted of thirty-five (35) scholars. The instruments used were student attendance, participation in school activities, improvement in the English Language Mathematics state exam, and improvement in student’s social-emotional capacity using Satchel Pulse.
