“WINNING” in Student Achievement with W.I.N

Catherine "Amy" Moy-Davis Cahn Fellow 2022

John C. Haines School is known for its diversity and academic success.  Recognizing that unfinished learning from COVID-19 still has its academic and social emotional challenges, our Cahn project focuses on:

  • Effectively integrating supports into the regular school day to strengthen Tier 1 instruction and SEL (social emotional learning)

  • Leveraging in-house personnel to support students in Tiers 2 and 3 throughout the school year

To create a structure to help achieve these goals, we established a daily W.I.N. (What I Need) block into our school wide schedule. This block is integrated into the school day where teachers support students in either enrichment and/or intervention activities.  The focus of the W.I.N. block is to create a more personalized and responsive learning environment that acknowledges and addresses the diverse needs of students by providing students with resources to reach their academic goals as well as supporting and developing social emotional skills.  This time is also intended for teachers and students to foster relationships.
