The Power of Joy and Care – Reminding Ourselves About the Students Who Sit in Front of Us

Amy Hom Cahn Fellow 2020

During this COVID-19 pandemic, we had to take a step back to understand who we are as educators and who our students are as learners. At PS 1, questions of equity and restoring joy in learning surfaced throughout the year in our teaching and our students’ learning. Through an academic focus on math and our work with The Minor Collective, we refocused our planning, teaching, and student engagement to incorporate access for all, finding joy in our learning together, integrating our life experiences, and just listening to our students. Join us as we explore how our school-wide approach and collective inquiry study influenced staff to look and plan for our students differently.
