“The Writing Journey at Stockton: Writing Clinics” How can we build a community of engaged and independent writers?

James Brown Cahn Fellow 2019

The Stockton Community School is a Pre-Kindergarten through grade five school in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Our project’s aim is to improve and build our student’s independent writing abilities and increase their engagement and interest by building our teacher’s pedagogy in the area of writing instruction. We serve a very diverse community of students and families, many of which are below poverty rates and many of our students have major gaps in learning and developmental delays due to the lack of exposure and early learning experiences. As a school we take pride in meeting all of our students where they are by providing the best academic program and supports we can in a caring and supportive environment that gives access to many resources and services needed in our community.
